Sarah Evans (1825) and Charles Whitcombe (c1821)

married Jun QTR 1854 in Ross District, Herefordshire.

Sarah Evans (1825), daughter of John Evans (c1796) and Susannah Preece (c1802), was baptised 30 Sep 1825 in Bridstow, Herefordshire. She married Charles Whitcombe in Jun QTR 1854 in Ross District, Herefordshire. Charles was a Labourer and Quarry Man, born in Whitchurch Herefordshire in about 1821. After 1881, Sarah and Charles were living separately: Sarah in Whitchurch and Charles in Ross for the 1881 census, and both in separate abodes in Whitchurch in 1891. Sarah is living alone as a widow in Whitchurch in 1901.

Sarah and Charles had two known children - Charles and Henry, born in Whitchurch in 1861 and 1865 respectively.

Known children of Sarah and Charles:

Charles Whitcombe 1861

Charles Whitcombe was baptised in Whitchurch Parish on 09 Jun 1861. He is the first known child to Sarah and Charles. Charles married Emma Williams (1867) in Whitchurch, Herefordshire on 02 Mar 1888 and had six known children. Charles and Emma lived in both Whitchurch and Tredegar, Monmouthshire: Charles worked many years as a coal miner and Tredegar was a key location for coal mining. Henry Whitcombe 1865

Henry Whitcombe was baptised in Whitchurch Parish, Herefordshire on 04 Jun 1865. I believe he joined the Royal Artillery at the age of 19 in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, in 1884, having already been a member of the 1st Derby Volunteers. Henry was living as a boarder in Stoke Damerel, Devonshire for the 1891 census - his occupation was given as Staff Sergeant for the R.A. (Royal Artillery). On 18 April 1892 he married Ellen Elizabeth Maynard (1873) in Plympton St. Mary District, Devonshire and the couple were living in Freshwater, on the Isle of Wight, for the 1901 census (he was a Quarter Master Sergeant). Henry was discharged from the military in 1905 at Shoeburyness, Essex (home of the School of Gunnery) after two terms of engagement.
